Calderone Glacier

The Calderone Glacier lies high on Gran Sasso near Corno Grande. It has been dramatically reduced in recent decades, so visitors should not expect a sweeping alpine glacier; what remains is fragile, seasonal, and scientifically important.

It is best understood from proper mountain routes and with current local information. Do not go poking around unstable high terrain just to tick off a name from a map.

A story
The Calderone was long cited as Europe's southernmost glacier, but climate change has reduced it severely. It is now as much a warning sign as a natural sight: the name survives more strongly than the ice.
