Costa dei Trabocchi

The Costa dei Trabocchi runs the southern stretch of the Abruzzo coast from Ortona down to Vasto and beyond, taking its name from the traditional wooden fishing platforms that still cling to the rocks at intervals along the cliffs. A cycle and walking path — the Via Verde dei Trabocchi — now runs the length of the coast on a converted railway line.

Several trabocchi between Vasto and San Vito Chietino have been restored as seafood restaurants; eating dinner on one of them, with the platform creaking in the swell and the waiters running plates up wooden ramps, is one of the few unique experiences of the southern Abruzzo coast.

A story
The trabocchi are old wooden fishing platforms, built on stilts out into the shallow water, with a net rigged on long poles that can be cranked up and down by a single fisherman. Gabriele D'Annunzio described them in 1889 as 'enormous spiders' clinging to the rocks. A few have been converted into restaurants, where you eat what was caught that morning a few metres from your table.
