Bars and Cafes

Neapolitans take their coffee seriously. An espresso here is typically darker, stronger, and cheaper than anywhere else in Italy — the tradition of paying for a stranger's coffee (caffè sospeso, or "suspended coffee") is genuine and still practised. Stand at the bar; sitting down typically costs more.

For drinking in the evening, the best areas are Piazza Bellini in the historic centre — where bars spread their tables across the square — and the Chiaia district, which has Naples' most polished aperitivo scene. The streets around Via San Pasquale in Chiaia are dense with small wine bars that fill up most evenings. Bars along the seafront in Posillipo are popular in summer.
