Shopping in Naples

Naples is not primarily a shopping destination, but it has some genuinely distinctive things to buy. San Gregorio Armeno, in the historic centre, is the city's street of nativity scene (presepe) craftsmen — the workshops sell handmade figures year-round, not just at Christmas, and the quality ranges from tourist trinkets to genuine craft pieces. Ceramics and coral jewellery are made locally on the Sorrentine peninsula and sold throughout the city.

The Spaccanapoli area has concentrations of antique dealers, bookshops, and print sellers. For everyday shopping, the Chiaia district has the smartest boutiques; the Piazza dei Martiri area is the most upmarket.

The Forcella Market (between Piazza Garibaldi and Corso Umberto) is worth a visit for its market energy even if you don't intend to buy — it sells everything imaginable at prices that suggest not everything was obtained through entirely legitimate channels.
