A small Baroque chapel housing the Cristo Velato (Veiled Christ, 1753) by Giuseppe Sammartino — a marble sculpture so realistic in its rendering of a translucent veil over a recumbent body that visitors have been known to touch it to confirm it is stone. One of the most astonishing objects in Italian art. Antonio Canova called it the most beautiful sculpture he had ever seen.
The chapel also contains two remarkable anatomical machines in the crypt — 18th-century wax and metal recreations of the human circulatory system, still debated by scholars. Book tickets in advance; entry is timed and the chapel is small.
