The Angevin-era castle near the port, also known as the Maschio Angioino, is one of Naples's most recognisable landmarks. Built in 1279, it has massive cylindrical towers and houses a small civic museum with frescoes, bronze doors from the fifteenth century, and a collection of Neapolitan painting. The Palatine Chapel inside is the best-preserved medieval space in the castle.
The castle is visible from most of the waterfront and is a useful orientation point when arriving by ferry or navigating towards the port. Entrance includes the museum; the views from the top of the towers over the bay and towards Vesuvius are excellent.
