The most celebrated cafe in Naples, open since 1860 and occupying a series of lavishly decorated Belle Époque rooms next to Piazza del Plebiscito. Once frequented by Oscar Wilde, Hemingway, and Sartre; the intellectual and artistic life of Naples has passed through these rooms for over 160 years. The place for a Neapolitan espresso (strong, short, drunk standing at the bar) and a sfogliatella — the flaky, shell-shaped Neapolitan pastry — for breakfast.
More expensive than a typical Naples bar, but the atmosphere earns it. Stand at the counter to pay bar prices rather than the higher table rates.
