The Royal Palace, built by Domenico Fontana in 1600, fronts the grand Piazza del Plebiscito. Eight niches in the facade contain statues of Naples' most important monarchs. Inside, a museum occupies the royal apartments: 30 rooms with original furnishings, tapestries, and a royal chapel. The domed church of San Francesco di Paola across the piazza is free to enter.
