Porta Capuana

A monumental Renaissance city gate marking the old road from Naples toward Capua.

Porta Capuana is one of the grandest surviving gates of old Naples, built as a formal entrance to the city on the road to Capua. Its pale stone arch and round flanking towers still have real presence, even though the traffic and street life around Piazza Enrico de Nicola now press close on every side.

Come for the contrast as much as for the architecture. The gate sits near Castel Capuano and the railway-station side of the historic centre, so it works well as a short detour before pushing into the older lanes toward the cathedral and Spaccanapoli.
