The Tomb of Virgil is a small, atmospheric stop near Mergellina, wrapped in the long afterlife of one of Rome's great poets. Whether the monument is truly Virgil's burial place is less important than the tradition itself: for centuries travellers came here to pay respects to the author of the Aeneid.
The site sits near the entrance to the old Roman tunnel through Posillipo, so it also works as a reminder of Naples' ancient infrastructure. Do not expect a grand museum. Come for a literary pilgrimage, a quiet pocket of green, and a link between classical Naples and the writers who later made the city part of the Grand Tour imagination.
