One of the best-regarded restaurants in the old town, the Osteria dei Nobili Santi occupies a vaulted medieval room just off Via dei Mercanti and serves Campanian cooking with a strong emphasis on local ingredients — the vegetables from the Cilento, the fish from the gulf, the mozzarella from the buffalo farms south of the city. The menu changes with the seasons but typically features a generous selection of antipasti followed by fish-based pasta dishes and grilled or baked secondi. The wine list focuses on Campanian producers, with good representation from the Cilento and Irpinia wine zones.
The room fills up quickly on weekend evenings; booking ahead is advisable. Service is attentive without being fussy. Prices are considerably more reasonable than anything comparable on the Amalfi Coast, which is part of what makes eating in Salerno a genuine pleasure rather than an exercise in restraint.
