Salerno rewards slow exploration. The historic centre is compact enough to cover on foot, with the Duomo, the medieval street of Via dei Mercanti, and the Giardino della Minerva all within a short walk of each other. The Castello di Arechi dominates the skyline and offers the best views over the gulf. After dark — or at golden hour — the lungomare is where the city comes alive.
