Eating Out

Salerno eats well and cheaply compared to its glamorous neighbours. The city's position between the sea and the Cilento hills gives it an excellent range of seafood, local vegetables, and cheeses. Look for cuoppo di mare — fried mixed seafood in a paper cone — as street food, and be sure to try local buffalo mozzarella, which comes from the plains south of the city. The old town has the best concentration of restaurants; avoid the tourist-facing places on the lungomare and head instead into the lanes off Via dei Mercanti.
