San Mauro Pascoli — Birthplace of Giovanni Pascoli

About 8 kilometres inland from Bellaria, the small town of San Mauro Pascoli was the birthplace of Giovanni Pascoli (1855–1912), one of the most important Italian poets of his era. His verse — rooted in rural Romagna landscapes, childhood memory, and a sense of loss — shaped a generation of Italian writers and still appears in school curricula across the country. The house where he was born has been preserved as a museum, and his garden, which he tended and wrote about, survives much as he left it. The visit is brief but affecting: the house is modest, the garden is quiet, and the connection between the poetry and the place is immediate for anyone who has read his work. Even without Italian, the setting — a Romagna farmstead surrounded by the flat countryside he described in poems like Myricae — conveys something of what he was writing about.
