Acquario di Cattolica - Le Navi

By far the biggest visitor attraction on this stretch of the Adriatic, Le Navi is Italy's second-largest aquarium (after Genoa). It is housed in a remarkable Mussolini-era complex of buildings designed as four ships moored in a row along the seafront, restored in the 1990s and now home to about 100 tanks of Mediterranean and tropical species — sharks, rays, sea turtles, otters, jellyfish, penguins.

The exhibits are arranged thematically rather than chronologically, and the touch tank and ray pool are popular with children. Allow two to three hours; longer if you have small kids who want to do the petting zoo and the reptile house as well. Booking ahead online is strongly recommended in summer.

A story
Le Navi occupies a 1934 Fascist-era complex originally built as a children's seaside colony for the children of railway workers — the four pavilions were designed in the shape of ships docking on land, hence the modern aquarium's name.
