Piazza I Maggio

The town's signature public square, set just back from the seafront, is dominated by the Fontana delle Sirene — a spiral, shell-like ceramic fountain in ochre and blue designed by the screenwriter Tonino Guerra in the 1990s. The fountain doubles as an enormous open-air mosaic, and on summer evenings the steps around it are the meeting point for the whole town.

The piazza is flanked by cafes, gelaterias, and the modernist Galleria Comunale. It's where festivals (Mystfest, the Festival of Flowers, the summer concerts) open and close; on most evenings between June and September there is some kind of free event going on.

A story
The shell-shaped Fontana delle Sirene at the centre of the piazza was designed by Tonino Guerra, the screenwriter behind Fellini's Amarcord and many of Antonioni's films — Guerra, born nearby in Santarcangelo, designed several public installations across the Romagna in the 1990s.
