The Town Hall begun in 1243 was the Este family residence until the court moved to the castle in the 16th century. The piazza in front is the social heart of the city, and the building's grand staircase -- the Scalone d'Onore -- is open to visitors. Bronze statues of Nicolo III and Borso d'Este flank the entrance.
