Across the Parma stream from the historic centre, the Parco Ducale is the city's main green space — a 20-hectare formal park laid out in the late 16th century around the Palazzo Ducale, with French-style avenues and statues added in the 18th century. It is a pleasant break between sights, much used by joggers and parents with prams.
The Palazzo Ducale itself, deep inside the park, is now the regional headquarters of the carabinieri and only open by occasional tour. The park also contains the Palazzetto Eucherio Sanvitale, a small Renaissance villa with Parmigianino frescoes that occasionally hosts exhibitions.
