Villa Mussolini

Villa Mussolini is an early 20th-century seaside villa that served as the Mussolini family's summer residence through the 1930s. The building is now the headquarters of Riccione's municipal administration, but the exterior and the surrounding gardens are visible and the villa's architecture — rational style with fascist-era detailing — is characteristic of the period.

The villa stands on the viale Gramsci, the seafront promenade, and is most interesting as a document of how Riccione was shaped by its association with the Fascist regime. The town developed rapidly in the 1930s, partly because of the prestige the Mussolini connection brought, and some of that architecture is still visible in the streets around the villa.

A story
Mussolini spent several summers in Riccione during the 1930s, using the villa as an informal headquarters while his family took the sea air. His daughter Edda Mussolini called Riccione her favorite place in Italy. The town embraced the connection at the time and has spent most of the decades since navigating the complicated legacy, which has not prevented the villa from becoming a tourist attraction.
