Borgo San Giuliano

The pastel-painted Borgo San Giuliano, across the Tiberius Bridge from the old town, is the most atmospheric neighbourhood in Rimini. Narrow streets, low fishermen's houses, lines of laundry, and several hundred murals — many of them riffing on Fellini, who shot scenes in this quarter — make it the part of town where you want to lose an hour.

The first weekend of September the whole borgo throws its famous Festa de' Borg: long tables in the streets, music from windows, food from courtyards. The neighbourhood is small, walkable, and lined with osterias.

A story
The Borgo was the fishermen's quarter on the far side of the Marecchia, separated from the city by the Tiberius Bridge. After it sank into poverty in the twentieth century, the residents in the 1980s began commissioning murals from local and visiting artists on the themes of fishing life and the films of Federico Fellini. The murals are still being added and now run to more than 250 across the quarter.
