Ponte di Tiberio

A five-arched Roman bridge in white Istrian stone crossing the Marecchia at the northern edge of the old town. The roadway over the bridge was closed to cars in 2015 and is now one of the most pleasant places in Rimini — a wide stone deck looking down at the river and the Borgo San Giuliano on the far bank.

Walk over at sunset for the colour on the limestone. The square at the city end is the natural meeting point of the historic centre; on summer evenings it fills with people taking an aperitivo on the steps.

A story
Tiberius finished the bridge in AD 21. It has carried traffic continuously ever since — close to 2,000 years — and survived even when the Germans rigged it with dynamite in 1944. The fuse was lit; only the prompt action of a local engineer, who climbed down and cut the wires under fire, saved it. It is one of the oldest functioning bridges in the world.
