Torre Civica

The Torre Civica, Pordenone's civic tower, stands at the southern end of the Corso next to the Municipio. The tower dates from the fourteenth century and is notable for its pronounced lean — visible from several hundred metres away — the result of medieval earthquake damage that was never corrected. Climb to the top (when open) for the best views over the corso and the surrounding roofscape.

Together with the Palazzo Comunale alongside it, the tower forms the symbolic centre of the old city. The piazza in front is the starting point for any walk through Pordenone.

A story
The Torre Civica was built in the 14th century but gained its distinctive asymmetrical roof — leaning visibly to one side — after an earthquake tilted it sometime in the medieval period. Unlike the famous tower at Pisa, Pordenone's tower was never straightened, and locals have developed an affectionate pride in this modest but endearing architectural quirk.
