Loggia del Lionello

The Loggia del Lionello is the pink and white Venetian Gothic loggia on the lower side of Piazza della Libertà — Udine's old town hall, named after the goldsmith Nicolò Lionello who designed it in 1448. Pointed arches, slender pillars, and a balcony for proclamations: it is a deliberate echo of Venice's Doge's Palace in miniature.

The building suffered a serious fire in 1876 and was rebuilt to the original design. You can step inside to see the ground-floor portico, which serves as a public passage; the council chamber upstairs is open occasionally for cultural events.
