Locally still called Piazza San Giacomo or just "the herb market" (Piazza delle Erbe), this is Udine's second great square — a wide arcaded space lined with bars and small shops, with the church of San Giacomo at one end and a Renaissance column with the Madonna at the centre. It functions as the city's outdoor living room.
Come at aperitivo time (around 6 pm) when most of Udine seems to be standing under the porticoes with a glass of Friulano. The Saturday morning market still spreads across the square.
