Mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus

At the very tip of Monte Orlando, within the regional park that covers the headland, stands one of the best-preserved Roman funerary monuments in central Italy. The cylindrical mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus — consul in 42 BC, founder of Lyon and Augst, and notably the man who proposed the title "Augustus" for Octavian — was built in the 1st century BC and remains largely intact, its drum of travertine blocks rising above the cliff edge with the sea on three sides.

The monument is a textbook example of the late Republican mausoleum type: a solid cylindrical drum on a square base, originally topped by a tumulus of earth and trees. The Doric frieze is still legible, and an inscription on the drum identifies the occupant and lists his offices in the standard cursus honorum formula. It is among the very few monuments of this kind where the owner is known with certainty.

The park around it offers quiet walking paths through Mediterranean scrub with panoramic views over the Gulf of Gaeta and, on clear days, as far as the Pontine Islands and the Campanian coast. Access is from the upper old town; the walk takes about 30–40 minutes each way.
