Rome's bar culture runs from early morning espresso at a standing counter to late-night aperitivo crowds spilling into cobblestone squares. The city doesn't have a concentrated nightlife district — the best bars are scattered through Trastevere, Pigneto, Monti, and Prati. Nightlife in the tourist centre is mostly tourist-facing; the locals are in the outer neighbourhoods.
The aperitivo hour (roughly 18:00–21:00) is when Rome's bars are at their best: drinks come with small snacks, the light is golden, and the pace is sociable rather than frantic. For serious nightclubs, the Ostiense and Testaccio areas have the most consistent options, often in converted industrial spaces.
