Isola Tiberina

Isola Tiberina is the small boat-shaped island in the Tiber between central Rome and Trastevere. It is a fine short detour rather than a major sight: cross by Ponte Fabricio, look back from Ponte Garibaldi, and you get one of the prettiest river views in the city.

The island has been tied to healing since antiquity, when a temple to Aesculapius stood here. Today it still has a hospital, along with the church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola and a quieter feel than the streets on either bank.
