Santa Maria in Cosmedin is a medieval church best known for the Bocca della Verità, the ancient stone mask by the entrance that has become one of Rome's most photographed curiosities. The church itself is worth time after the queue: it has a tall Romanesque belfry, a quiet medieval choir enclosure, and a simple Cosmatesque floor that feels older and less polished than many of Rome's grander churches.
