Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta

Baroque basilica overlooking the harbour

The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta stands on a terrace above the harbour, its yellow facade and ochre bell tower visible from the water long before you arrive. The church dates from the 12th century, though most of what you see inside is Baroque — the result of a major reconstruction in the 18th century funded by the town's prosperous maritime families. Camogli was, in its heyday, one of the most important merchant shipping ports in the Mediterranean, and the wealth generated by that trade is evident in the church's ornate interior.

Look for the collection of votive paintings inside — small oil paintings commissioned by sailors and their families to give thanks for surviving storms or other maritime disasters. They line the walls in clusters and offer a vivid, if naive, record of centuries of seafaring from this small harbour. The church is free to enter and keeps generous hours.
