Orco Feglino

Liguria hill municipality above Finale Ligure, split between valley hamlet and ridge village below Monte Alto

Orco Feglino is a municipality in the hinterland of Finale Ligure, on the southern side of Monte Alto. The township of Feglino sits on the floor of the Aquila valley, while Orco is perched on a ridge in a panoramic position. A possession of the Del Carretto family, who built a castle here, it was ruled by Spain from the second half of the sixteenth century until 1713, when it passed to the Republic of Genoa.

A few remains of the medieval castle walls and tower still stand on a crag near Orco. The nearby church of San Lorenzino dates from the twelfth to fourteenth century and has a campanile with two rows of two-light windows. The church of San Lorenzo at Feglino was renovated in the baroque era, and the shrine of Santa Maria Ausiliatrice dates from 1874. The surrounding terraced farmland, enclosed by woods, produces fruit, flowers, and vegetables.

Above the village the limestone walls of the Finalese rise in long grey-and-orange tiers β€” the Rocca di Perti crag is one of the busiest sport-climbing sites in Italy, with hundreds of bolted routes within walking distance of the centre. Orco Feglino works best as a base for walkers and climbers rather than as a sightseeing destination in its own right.

Things to Do

There is not much to "do" in Orco Feglino in the conventional sense β€” it is a quiet hinterland comune of two old hamlets joined by terraced fields. What it offers is a slice of inland Liguria most coastal visitors never see: medieval stonework on a crag above the village, simple Romanesque churches, and a network of limestone crags above town that have made Finale Ligure one of Europe's premier sport climbing areas. Orco Feglino sits squarely in that climbing belt β€” the cliffs of Rocca di Perti and Rocca di Corno are within walking distance.
