Sanremo's town centre is compact and the main sights are walkable. The old town, La Pigna, the seafront promenade, and the casino are all within easy reach on foot from the central hotels. The climb into La Pigna is steep but short.
The coastal cycling path (Pista Ciclabile) is the best way to explore the seafront and reach the beaches east and west of the centre. Bicycles can be rented from operators near the waterfront and the station. The path runs for 24 kilometres in total and is entirely flat.
Local buses (SAR, operated by Riviera Trasporti) run along the coast and up into the hills behind town. For the hill villages above Sanremo — Poggio, Ceriana, Bajardo — a car or a bus is necessary; they are not walkable from the coast. Taxis are available from the station and the seafront.
The railway station is underground (the old surface station closed in 2001) and is located east of the centre. Trains run regularly along the coast to Ventimiglia (15 minutes west, convenient for Monaco and Nice) and to Imperia and Genoa in the other direction.
