La Pigna

La Pigna is the medieval heart of Sanremo, a dense cluster of dark alleys, vaulted passages, and stone staircases that climbs from the waterfront up to the hilltop sanctuary. It is one of the best-preserved medieval quarters on the Ligurian coast and, better still, largely free of tourists — you can wander for an hour without hearing another foreign language.

The quarter is best explored on foot and without a map. Enter from the lower gates near Via Palazzo and simply head upwards. The covered streets (caruggi) are cool in summer and shelter from rain in winter. Look for the original iron rings where horses were once tethered, the holy-water niches at corners, and the occasional small piazza where washing still hangs between the houses. The warren rewards slow walking and mild disorientation.

A story
The name "La Pigna" — the pine cone — comes from the shape of the hill the old town climbs: tight, compact, and pointed at the top. Locals say that in the medieval period the maze of covered alleys and fortified gates was designed to confuse raiders from the sea, who would enter the quarter and immediately lose their way among the identical-looking lanes.
