Pista Ciclabile (Coastal Cycling Path)

The Pista Ciclabile di Sanremo is a flat coastal cycling and pedestrian path that runs for 24 kilometres along the seafront, from Sanremo westward to Ospedaletti and eastward toward San Lorenzo al Mare. It was built on the bed of the old coastal railway line after the rail service moved underground, and it now provides one of the most pleasant ways to experience the Ligurian coast without a car.

The path is accessible to all fitness levels — children, casual riders, and serious cyclists use it. Bicycles can be rented from several operators in Sanremo town centre. The route passes through pine groves, over low bridges, and alongside beaches, with sea views nearly the entire way. The stretch east toward San Lorenzo al Mare (the longer direction) is particularly scenic. This is also the final stretch of the Milan–Sanremo cycling race, one of the great one-day classics of professional cycling, which arrives here each March after covering 300 kilometres from the north.

A story
The cycling path follows the route of the old coastal railway, which was buried underground between 1998 and 2001 when the line was doubled. Rather than let the old trackbed fall into disuse, the municipality converted it into one of the longest seaside cycling paths in Italy — a practical reuse that has since been replicated in other Ligurian towns.
