Tellaro and the Gulf of La Spezia have drawn writers for two centuries. The Romantics camped out at San Terenzo and Lerici on the far side of the gulf; D.H. Lawrence and Frieda spent the winter of 1913–14 in a pink fisherman's cottage in Tellaro itself, writing letters about the octopus legend and the bells of San Giorgio.
