Lawrence wrote much of his early Italian work from the cottage he and Frieda rented in Tellaro in 1913–14, including drafts of Twilight in Italy. Sea and Sardinia came later, but the same eye is at work: a stranger's irritated, alert account of a southern Europe that was still poor and very strange to an English reader.
