Bergamo's main art museum holds one of the best collections of northern Italian painting outside Milan. Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, Lorenzo Lotto — the permanent collection is genuinely strong. Lotto's work here is especially worth seeking out; he spent years in Bergamo and the city shaped his best period.

A story
Count Giacomo Carrara founded the academy in 1796 with the specific intention of making art education available to ordinary Bergamaschi, not just aristocrats. He donated his personal collection of 1,800 works to start it. Today the museum holds over 1,800 paintings and is considered one of the most important art galleries in northern Italy outside Milan.
