An 18th-century palace a few doors down Via Brera from the Pinacoteca, bought by the Italian state in 1972 with the intention of becoming an extension of the museum. The project — known as "Grande Brera" — stalled for half a century before finally opening to the public in December 2024. It now holds the Pinacoteca's 20th-century collections: a Picasso, a Morandi still life, Boccioni's Rissa in Galleria, and Pellizza da Volpedo's La Fiumana, alongside the Jucker, Vitali, Mattioli, and Jesi collections of Italian modern art.

A single ticket covers both Palazzo Citterio and the Pinacoteca, so the two are best visited together — the older Renaissance and Baroque rooms first, then a short walk down the street to see where the collection picks up in the 20th century.
