El Brellin

18th-century washhouse grocery turned canalside restaurant serving classic Milanese risotto and ossobuco

Address Vicolo dei Lavandai, Alzaia Naviglio Grande 14, 20144 Milan
Opening Hours Daily 12:30–14:30, 19:30–23:00 (dinner only, closed Sun)

El Brellin occupies an 18th-century building right on the Vicolo dei Lavandai, once the drogheria where the washerwomen of the canal bought hot water, soap, and brushes before kneeling at the stone basins outside. The name comes from the Lombard dialect word for the wooden kneeler the lavandai used while scrubbing — a detail that ties the restaurant directly to the alley's working history rather than just borrowing it for atmosphere.

The kitchen serves Milanese and Lombard classics: risotto alla milanese, ossobuco in gremolata, rustin negàa (pork braised in butter and sage), and riso al salto. Two floors of dining rooms with fireplaces and coffered ceilings seat up to 200, and in summer tables spread out into the courtyard alongside the old wash-basins. It's one of the longest-running and most atmospheric kitchens on the Naviglio Grande — book ahead for dinner, especially on weekends.
