Urbino Cathedral

A late 18th-century neoclassical cathedral facing the Palazzo Ducale.

The original 15th-century cathedral collapsed in the earthquake of 1789 and was rebuilt over the next several decades to designs by Giuseppe Valadier, in a sober neoclassical idiom that contrasts with the warm brick of the surrounding city. The interior is white and high, with paintings by Federico Barocci (the painter, born in Urbino) and Cristoforo Unterperger.

Below the cathedral is the Museo Diocesano Albani, holding the diocese's treasury of liturgical objects, illuminated manuscripts, and Federico Barocci canvases — the finest small religious museum in the Marche. Easy to combine with a visit to the Palazzo Ducale, which stands a few metres away.
