Fortezza Albornoz

A 14th-century hilltop fortress with the city's best panoramic view.

A short steep climb from the city centre, up Via dei Maceri, brings you to this hilltop fortress built in the 1360s by the Spanish cardinal Gil Álvarez Carrillo de Albornoz, who reconquered the Papal States after the Avignon exile. The walls were modernised in the 16th century and converted into a public park in the 19th.

The fortress itself is small but the views are the reason to come: a clean panorama of Urbino's twin hills, the towers of the Palazzo Ducale, the city walls falling away into green countryside. Sunset is best. The grass slope below is a favourite picnic spot for the university students.
