One of Campobasso's oldest churches, San Giorgio dates to the Romanesque period and sits at the beginning of the climb toward the Castello Monforte. The exterior is plain stone, worn smooth by centuries; the interior has fragments of medieval fresco that have survived dampness and neglect. It is rarely open except for Mass, but when it is, the interior — dim, cool, and smelling of old stone — gives a more immediate sense of the medieval town than any museum could.
The church square offers the first good view up toward the castle and is a natural resting point on the climb through the old town.
