Campobasso divides neatly into its medieval upper town, which climbs toward the Castello Monforte and rewards slow exploration, and its modern lower town, which is simply a quiet regional capital getting on with its business. The real reward is the upper town: narrow stepped lanes, small churches with worn frescoes, and an almost total absence of other tourists.
