The best times to visit Campobasso are spring (April–May) and early autumn (September–October), when the weather is mild and the surrounding hills are at their most attractive. Summers are warm and dry — the elevation keeps temperatures reasonable compared to the coast, rarely exceeding 30°C. The city empties noticeably in August when locals leave for the beach.
The Sagra di Corpus Domini (late May or June, depending on the liturgical calendar) is the city's major annual festival and one of the most visually striking events in southern Italy. Costumed figures — representing biblical and allegorical characters — are suspended on concealed metal armatures so that they appear to float above the crowd during a procession through the streets. The spectacle is genuinely surprising and worth timing a visit around.
