The central square of the lower town, where the evening passeggiata plays out with the quiet dignity that southern Italian cities do better than anywhere else in Europe. The square is bordered by a mix of 19th-century neoclassical buildings and more recent additions, with a fountain at its centre and the cathedral nearby. It is the social heart of the city: in summer, the outdoor tables fill from early evening, and the pedestrianised Corso Vittorio Emanuele, which extends from the square, channels the slow drift of the evening promenade.
Come here between 6pm and 8pm on any day and you will see Campobasso as a working Italian provincial capital, which is more interesting than any tourist sight.
