Cattedrale della Madia

Baroque cathedral with illuminated boat procession in December

The cathedral, dedicated to the Madonna della Madia, dominates the main square of the old town. The current Baroque building dates from the eighteenth century, though a church has stood on this site since the Norman period. The interior has a calm, luminous quality, and the facade looks out over a piazza where the town gathers in the evenings. The Madonna della Madia is celebrated in a festa each December, which includes a procession of illuminated boats in the harbour — one of Puglia's more atmospheric winter events.
