Monopoli is well placed for exploring central Puglia. Alberobello and its trulli are 30 kilometres inland. The Castellana Grotte cave complex — one of the most spectacular in Italy — is a similar distance. Closer still, Conversano is a hill town with a Norman castle, a Romanesque cathedral, and far fewer tourists than its neighbours. The ruins of ancient Egnathia, the Greek and Roman city whose destruction led to Monopoli's founding, are about 15 kilometres south along the coast road.
