Cala Porta Vecchia

Tiny sandy cove right below the old-town walls

A pocket of sand and shallow water tucked into the seafront on the south side of the centro storico, with the white walls of the old town rising directly above it. The Cala is the most photographed beach in Monopoli — and the most crowded in August — but in May and September it is genuinely lovely: clear water for swimming and a five-minute walk back into the lanes for lunch.

There is no lido here; come with your own towel. The rocks at either end are good for jumping into the water if the swell is calm. A small kiosk at the back of the cove sells coffee and granita in summer.
