Church of San Domenico Maggiore

The Church of San Domenico Maggiore is a Romanesque-Gothic church in Taranto's old city, built in 1302 on layers of earlier sacred sites. A Byzantine church stood here before it, and that in turn reused the site of an ancient Greek temple.

The approach is part of the experience: the church is reached by a broad Baroque staircase added in the 18th century. Together with the older fabric of the church, it makes the site a compact lesson in Taranto's overlapping Greek, Byzantine, medieval, and Baroque history.
