Castello di Venere

The Norman castle at the southeastern tip of Erice sits on the very edge of the mountain, with sheer drops into the valley below on three sides. Built in the 12th century by the Normans over the site of the ancient temple of Venus Erycina, it occupies the most dramatic position in a village full of dramatic positions.

The castle is open for visits and the gardens around it offer what are arguably the best views in Erice: west across the salt flats to Trapani and the Egadi Islands, north along the coast, and — on exceptionally clear days — as far as Cape Bon in Tunisia. The interior is atmospheric if not extensively furnished. Allow 45 minutes to walk around the perimeter and take in the full panorama.

A story
The castle stands on the site of the ancient Temple of Aphrodite (Venus Erycina), which was one of the most important sanctuaries in the western Mediterranean world. Carthaginian, Roman, and Arab rulers all maintained the sanctuary, and the Romans considered the goddess here a protector of their fleets. The Norman tower was built directly over the ancient temple precinct.
