When to Go

Erice at 750 metres is significantly cooler than the coast below, which makes it pleasant in July and August when Trapani and the coast are sweltering. On summer afternoons, the hilltop is often wrapped in clouds that don't touch the valley — the effect is atmospheric, though visibility for the views disappears. Morning visits in summer typically offer the clearest conditions.

Spring (April-June) is the best time: the air is clear, the wildflowers on the hillside are excellent, and the village is not overwhelmed with day-trippers from Palermo and Trapani. October and November are similarly pleasant, with lower crowds and good light for photography.

Winter in Erice can be cold and misty; occasional light snowfall occurs, which transforms the medieval streets dramatically. Many of the smaller shops and restaurants close from November through February.
